My first race report..... be gentle.
Early Saturday morning saw me head out to my old hometown of Scugog. I donned my T&R shirt hoping not to embarrass the good name as I was not as prepared for the run as I wanted to be. I got there with plenty of time to spare. Got my "race kit". Because this was a carbon neutral or green race it was paperless and environmentally friendly. The kit was a compost paper bag that you could fill with fresh local produce for a small donation of $2 to the food bank. The t-shirts were bamboo/cotton and friendly dyes. The race bib was hand made with seeds so you could plant it. Now I am by far not race experienced but this probably isn't the best idea because once you started to sweat and spill water on it, it started to disintegrate. I saw a few on the ground during the run and mine was only on with one pin at the end. I didn't know anyone running this race but I did talk to a few people, thanks to the T&R shirt. One guy as I was walking by said "Try&Run...fat ass-right?" It's a good thing I knew what he meant because you say that to any woman and... well.......no need to tell you the rest. With a small field of approx. 200 runners and one of the most beautiful days of summer, the horn blew and we were off and running. Without ever seeing the course I didn't know what to expect. When they described the course on-line they said "challenging hills" and only 2. Challenging they were and a lot more than 2. With long rolling hills it was reminiscent of the Wingnut with the total ascent being more than 1700ft.( the Wingnut is approx 1400ft ). Not that I'm complaining. Great for the butt. The roads were mostly loose gravel and uneven pavement. With beautiful countryside views it took my mind off everything. No traffic. Peacefull and quiet. I ran my own race, at my own pace. The water stations were full of young, friendly, supportive, local volunteers. But I have to say, like the bibs, the cups they used were also not the best for racing. Made of biodegradable corn byproducts they were clear plastic like cups that you couldn't pinch to drink on the run, even walking it went all over. An awesome band was playing The Hips New Orleans is Sinking as I came in for my victory lap around the track before crossing the finish line in my PB time. I received my locally hand made wooden "medal" ,took my time stretching and walking around before getting in the car and heading home. Overall for me an awesome course I thoroughly enjoyed. Friendly hometown feel. I'm all for reduce, re use, recycle and having my future family live in a healthy environment... but I'm not sure if racing and "all green" are a good combination. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but like I said I'm not experienced enough to know. Thanks for reading April

Sounds like it was fun!! I am trying to picture that race bib -- I would hate to think if you had a downpour during the race!!
Congratulations on your PB!! Especially on those hills!

Be careful wearing the T-shirt out in the rain. The "Fat Ass" may not be the only thing you have to worry about. Good read.

Great race report April. Sounds like you had a lot of fun. Congratulations on the PB.
I did this race in 2004. If the course hasn't changed any since than it was absolutely beautiful. Very country and rolling for sure. I can remember looking back at one point after going around a corner and looking for my son who was coming down this awesome hill. What a view back up. Glad we were heading down not up at that point. It was so quiet and peaceful and not a large crowd as I remember that year either. Just enough people that you could follow them or at least see them in the distance as we wound our way through the countryside. Should go back and try this one again. I walked that year, might just do that again as well.
