I don't like sausages either but do like hotdogs...... do they count for anything.
I could have stuck them in my fuelbelt yesterday for some extra nutrition though.
Or is there any in either of them???

Well said, cucina. When I noticed the other day that this rant was STILL going on I actually laughed. It has even become a topic of discussion on long runs with my running buddies! I agree. It is time to put it to bed and for all of us fellow runners to accept the fact that although we all share a common love of running, we also each have our own preferences and differences.
The only time I enjoy sausages is flattened and pre-cooked on the BBQ and then sliced up and put into pasta sauce. But it doesn't get made all that often. And if anyone is interested, I would be happy to note the one and only store in the Belleville area where I will buy them.
My dislikes? Black licorice ... can't even stand the smell.
Happy running everyone! Enjoy the BEAUTIFUL Autumn colours!!

Now Peter if you ran with susages in your ears the bear bells would be a moo point (quote Joey-Friends) because the bear will eat the bells with the sauages. I guess the up side to this would be that we'd hear the bear coming after that! Hey Bo Bo, I found a picinic basket! I LOVE black licorice!

Sandy, either that or whenever someone was running with a bear bell Yogi would say "hurry up Boo Boo I hear lunch coming".

So, if the bears eat Peter because of the sausages, should we all agree that this is safe, or unsafe for the rest of us? For once, I don't think I have a valid opinion...bothers me. Yuck, black licorice. Did you know that if you drink enough Corona, it starts to taste like black licorice? Lets just say it would be an unhealthy volume for most humans. Mike

I'm with you Kate. Don't like black licorice, taste or smell, yet back in the day sambuca was my shot of choice.

Now if one subscribes to the idea that everything happens for a reason, then it would make perfect sense that this rant has gone on exactly as long as it was meant to. If on the other hand it had died a premature death, we wouldn't be having deep philosophical discussions about black licorice(yuck) and sausages. Sausage and egg breakfast with homefries, toast and coffee, Oh Yeah! Pass the ketchup. Best licorice I've ever had is made in Australia and sold at Walmart, it comes in raspberry, strawberry and even that nasty tasting black stuff. Peter, it's not safe to put things in your ears! Jeff, I thought you knew me? I would consider this thread a success in that it's got people talking and participating. There's nothing wrong with a good healthy debate. All's well that ends well.

Now let?s refocus a bit folks and remember this is a Running/tri/fitness forum. So on that vien.
Nutritionally I tend to recommend avoiding saturated animal fat let alone highly processed, possibly full of nitrates and on top of that fried foods like sausages. But as a sport fuel let?s consider the possible benefits. Fat is a very dense calorie source actually 9 kcal per gram so it may work for ultra distance events lasting say over 8hrs As long as you can stomach it and the intensity of the event was low enough. Sausages also have protein. Research shows in longer events your body starts cannibalizing itself to provide about 10-15% of your caloric needs from muscle so protein may prevent this muscle breakdown.
Nutrionally I tend to recommend avoiding refined sugars let alone Artificial flavours and colours typically found in most licorice. But As a sport fuel let?s again consider the possible benefits. Sugar is a Extremely efficient fuel for the muscles and brain so for any event over Let?s say 1 1/2hrs it would be perfect. Providing about 4kcal/g of energy To keep glycogen stores and blood sugar stable. Again only if you can stomach It.
Last but not least a few of you have briefly mentioned alcoholic beverages (Sambuca, Corona?). Most people don?t realize that alcohol itself provides 7kcal/g of energy significantly more than both Protein and Carbs and a little Less than fat. So it should also be consider as a possible sports fuel??? Though events involving lots of coordination, skill and quick decisions could Present a problem. The good thing about alcohol is that when a large enough Quantity is consumed you really don?t care so much about how fast you?re Going anyways. The other good thing I?ve noticed about alcohol is that when In events or gatherings where large quantities of alcohol are consumed by the people present rarely is anyone wearing IPODS or MP3s??So we may extrapolate from this that if we all drank large quantities of alcohol before, during and after a race we wouldn?t have this Ipod wearing issue.
Isn?t interesting how things can come full circle.
Peace Peter

Wouldn't it be funny to participate in a race, only to have the aid stations calling out "corona" or "sambuca" versus "water" or "gatorade"? I ... for one ... would NEVER finish the race! (Because I certainly would have to make sure I stopped at every aid station along the way.)

We had one of those a couple of years ago in the wilds of Hanna Park. Except it was beer. Maybe we should have more.
And by the way, there is a wine run in June in Beamsville where you can have wine at every aid station. As Cathy about it, as she was the only one of the three of us who actually drank the wine while she was running.
