As the racing season winds down, I like to take some time to reflect on what I learned this year.  While most of the time I look at training patterns, injuries, miles and times, this year I started to think about how I can build on my strengths as a runner.
Self examination is difficult for many of us, so let me give some examples of strengths I've seen in other people.  One friend of mine has an incredible recovery rate.  A large portion of his speed and athletic ability is most certainly based on his ability to drive himself to the limit, and then do it again tommorrow.  To recover that quickly is a "super power".
Another friend of mine has an incredible ability to block out pain.  Over the years I've seen him complete 100km bike races after reconstructive jaw surgery.  You could literally see his cheeks while standing behind him.  He's run 2 marathons on 2 training runs, he's a one day monster.
Other people I know have incredible perseverance.  Those of you who run every single day are among that crowd.  Your persistence and perseverance allows you to achieve levels that the average person just can't reach.  You have a "super power".
Then there are those who compete on willpower alone.  Your drive and determination allow you to reach levels that should be beyond your reach, but your drive and ambition won't allow anything less that the spot you feel you deserve.
Every athlete has something they do exceedingly well, and often these abilities are not tied to our physical abilities, but our mental ones.  Find your strength and build on it, I'll see you at the starting line.

Mike

Your post makes me think of things like:

"Whether you think you can or think you can't ... you are probably right."
and
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Happy running!

I have the uncanny ability of finding unnaturally steep hills in seemingly flat routes.

Peace

That is quite an ability.  Maybe you're the guy who makes Wolfe Island uphill into the wind both ways....
