Here's the history ...
I hurt my back playing hockey last Tuesday (a week ago).  Nothing serious.  Was able to continue with my usual running schedule.  I was in a hockey tournament Saturday.  I got knocked down in my second game, took me a bit to get up and then afterwards, enforced some muscular injury in my back when I was lifting my hockey bag.  "Stubborn" is my middle name and I played the third game anyway.  Needless to say, Sunday I could hardly move.  Today ... a bit better.
I am registered to run the 7.5K Fat Ass on Sunday.  I have resigned to playing my usual Tuesday night hockey game and have already not run 2 scheduled runs.
If I am REALLY REALLY good this week and nurture ... does everyone think I will be ok to run Sunday??? I have really been looking forward to this event for a long time.  Haven't run trails since high school (you know ... when dinosaurs roamed the earth!).
(And yes ... contemplated going to the RMT, but I am even listening to their advice and trying to remember that the body hurts for a reason and maybe it needs a chance to "self heal".)

Kate,
If it were me I would go for a massage.  Not only will you feel better, but you will gain some insight on what is going on.  Yes, your body needs to heal and the massage will help with this process.

Kate you have to promise to be really , really good!

If it was me and I really, really wanted to run trails this weekend and I was hurting I wouldn't be playing hockey this week . It sounds like, for this week anyway, that the "fat ass" is more important than the game so judge yourself accordingly.

When the body hurts it is usually trying to tell us something unfortunately we don't always listen.

If your daughter was asking you the same question you posed to us what would your answer be?

This "Fat Ass" is truly the best run you will experience in a long time. It is so much fun no matter what distance you do. There is water and mud on all the courses which adds to that element of surprise and the fun. Remember to bring your sense of humour because one never looks the same coming out as you did going in.

Hope to see you there Kate it really is an awful lot of fun.

Kate,

I'd fast walk the 7.5km, and enjoy the day and event, don't mess with injuries. Lot's of years left to run the race when you're healthy. The Fat Ass is a trail run that when RUN it requires lots of balance, agility, a quick changes of direction and footing, not something that is appropriate with a back injury.

my 2 cents

Peace
Peter

Thanks Peter.  I will certainly keep that in mind as I don't want to totally miss the Fat Ass altogether!

I have come to the conclusion that I think I am moving significantly better today.  So hopefully I will be good to go if I don't do something stupid between now and Sunday!

Patti - my RMT is terrible about leaving appointments open for emergencies, so I can't get in to see them before Sunday.

Cucina - I promise to be really, really good!  I have already advised my hockey team that I won't be playing tonight.  That certainly wouldn't be a very bright move on my part.

And funny you should mention ... my recent advice to my daughter regarding some hip discomfort she was experiencing during a long run or during hockey was to "give it a rest for a couple of days and let's see what happens".  I don't know ... lately I just feel like I am being too quick to go to the RMT.  Maybe there is something to be said for just giving the body a rest once in a while!

Happy running everyone!!

I'd run it, but then again, I'm a little crazy.

I agree with mike ... and i'm not crazy! Do not miss this race for anything!! Your injury was a non running, impact injury ... skip the hockey and treat your body to a soothing trail run. My week looks like this ... installing two house lots of windows and doors, shovelling/raking stone in a basement and sand in a garage to get ready for concrete, loading up another basement with lumber for finishing and cleaning up after my drywallers and shinglers. I've got a heat pad on my back as I type this ...No Kidding! But I can tell you that I am  SOOOO looking forward to this weekend, it is not funny! My back is screaming out for a trail run and I think it deserves a treat! I find a couple of hours on the trails tends to fix what ails me, generally aligning things  rather than aggravating anything!
There's even some rain in the forecast this week ...Bonus!! Wait a minute .... maybe just a little crazy after all!

See you Sunday

Oh.  Lee, I think you mis-understood.  I'm sure she said she was playing hockey anyway.  I think she should do both.  Why choose between your 2 favorite things?  You're going to die eventually anyway, you might as well have fun in the process.

LOL

Seriously see a chiropractor or something, take a safe pain reliever, and GO!

You guys are so funny!

I didn't play hockey last night   cry  Yes.  It is one of my two favourite sports, but common sense prevailed.

And ... no matter what, I DO plan on being there Sunday.  Even if it involves heat packs and BioFreeze!  I have been looking forward to this event for a long time and wouldn't miss it for ANYTHING!!

See you all at the hill!!

Considering that my back still isn't 100% and I still haven't been for a run, I think I am a smart wuss too!
