Despite the fact that everyone ... and probably including my running buddy ... thought I was nuts, I was bound and determined to venture out yesterday morning for my "Sunday Long Run".  I was able to run mostly on semi-clear sidewalks and somewhat cleared roads and although I wasn't jumping snowbanks by any means, there were plenty of places where snow was ankle deep. 

I initially set out to do 15K (I know, not long for a lot of you, but a long enough run for me to mix into a combination of long run Sundays), to weave my way across the City and end up at the Dick Ellis Arena where hubby and daughter were having hockey practice and could give me a drive home.  After a quick look, I decided NOT to tackle the Bay Bridge (when I got there, it was snowing enough that I couldn't even tell if the sidewalk on the Bridge had been cleared), so according to Gmap, I fell a bit short.   sad   Oh well.

Here's the thing.  My hip muscles are very sore today ... not sore, maybe more like tired.  Is this from having to lift my feet a little more to trek through the snow?  Is it from the "one step forward, two steps back" running surface increasing overall distance?

Also ... just curious.  Did anyone tackle the Bay Bridge yesterday?  And if so ... what were the conditions?  I always like to include it in my running route when I can.

My hips felt the same way after my run on Sunday. I figured it was from the snow covered road.  Each step felt like I was running on the beach or maybe that's where I was wishing I was. Even my calves were sore for a bit. My hips felt like that when I first went from the TM to running outside and the first time I tried trail running. I have always chalked it up to my body adjusting to different conditions.

hip flexors...they are just wondering what's up? Once you do the snow running a couple more times it probably won't be an issue.

Thanks for the feedback April and Janet!

Had a great 8K early this morning without any complaints from the body!  And when I was running this morning WITH my running buddy, I realized that on Sunday when I ran without my running buddy, not only did my body have to deal with tackling the first real snow of the season, but I probably pushed myself harder than I should have (which is generally what I do when my buddy isn't around to help me pace myself).

So....I have the hip thing to, but I think I also pulled everything from my chin down.  Is there anything that would help?

3 runs in 4 days all on the snow.  Thank God for #10 x 3/8" hex head metal screws.

BUT  I did cycle 15 k and run 2K at the gym that day, so  I wasn't a total washout LOL  laugh

Snow under foot notwithstanding, I am also doing that GRID thing and also feel like every muscle is pulled from the chin down.  On that note, with core muscles complaining, I have realized how much one's body uses the core muscles when running.  Never noticed before.
So ... if you're not doing the GRID thing too, it could just be that with the slip sliding under foot, your core muscles are just getting an extra workout from focusing on balance, etc.

Mike just ran like a deer on Friday at the Resolution run. Dug Hill road doesn't take any prisoners and if you saw how fast he ran it you would actually wonder how he could still walk let alone merely complain about a hip replacement!

Get on that bike MIke then you will forget about your hip but then you know what will happen...your butt will start to hurt?!

K, so, I got a used Dura Ace 7800 groupo cheap like dirt.  Currently being installed.  I'm stoked.

Did I mention my new bike is yellow?  I've now had 3 yellow bikes (including my first one.)....maybe I missed my calling.

Now, about those wheels...

What kind of bike are you building up?  Have you done many tri's?  Are you planning on racing some this year?  Post a pic when you get it all built up!
