Does anyone know if electrolyte tablets can cause any indigestion/heartburn issues?  I was out for a run last night that lasted just under an hour.  Took an electrolyte tab before I went (I'm sweat big time-even in the winter), drank approx 1.5L of water during the day, and drank only about 300mL during my run.

Any thoughts?  Patti?

Thanks!

I would go with no on the tab but yes on the lack of water.

Dido.  Increase the water.  Your body can absorb 32 oz of water in 1 hour, and based on our conversation last night you need to increase your intake, during the day and while you are out there.  Also because you are such a heavy sweater you might need to increase your electrolytes.

I'm trying those tablets you gave me (the ones that mix into water) today.  I'm hoping they will make a difference.  And, I brought more water with me to see if I can increase my intake.

Is there a way to figure out how much I should be drinking throughout the day, aside from when I am running?

G'day Stephanie,

There are a lot of factors that effect how much water should be consumed during the day, things like the humidity of your environment (buildings are typically dryer in the winter than summer), your activity levels (sitting at a desk compared to chasing children around all day), and certain medications (diuretics, and blood pressure meds), types of foods you eat can also be a factor (most raw fruits and vegetables have a high water content). That all said, a rule of thumb I use is take your body weight in pounds divide by 2 and that would be the number of oz per day. So if you were 160lbs (72.7kg) that would be 80oz(2.5l) of water per day. Remember this is on top of what you'd need for exercise.

Hope this helps

Peace
Peter

Your calculation is perfect for me, since I actually do weigh 160 (sometimes 165 if my eating habits are slipping). I eat a lot of fruit and veggies most days.  I normally drink around 2L every day aside from what I drink during exercise. I tend to feel parched a lot still, which I don't really understand.

So maybe 2.5L every day should be my new goal!

Thanks Peter!

I'm listening...and just grabbed a pen and paper to do a little math! When I'm working I find it easier to drink enough water than when I'm at home...and home days are when I run or at least run longer. So I might need to wear my fuel belt around the house :)

Thanks for the tip,

Steph

Can someone explain Nuun vs eload and saltcaps? Why and when would you use one or the other?
Thanks

Same principle...diferent delivery method.  Personal preference.  I like Nuun on the bike or as a pre-race hydration method and Endurolytes or Salt Caps when I run.  Endurolytes have less sodium (40mg) so I tend to use those in the winter and Salt Caps (250mg) in the summer.

Sandy ~ just confirming.

It's OK to take Salt Tabs AS WELL AS drink water with NuuN tablets in it during a long run?

(Although I know last Sunday, even leaving an hour earlier than normal for a long run, I did NOT drink enough over the two + hours and by the amount of salt on the surface of my skin after my run did not take in enough Salt Tabs either!  Summer certainly crept up FAST!)
