Runner or jogger, weekend warrior or recreational athlete.  Whatever you call the kids participating in the County Kids of Steel (KOS) events on June 6th, they sure where troopers and were an example of not letting circumstances on races affect their effort.  Cold, rainy and windy the 14 to 19 year olds set off in an utter downpour after their pool swim to bike and run while the younger age groups watched, contemplating the job ahead of them.  While any KOS event is motivational to watch, this event on this day was truly inspirational.  Congratulations to all athletes that participated.

Hi Sandy,

The kids were certainly troopers, but there were another group that need to be commended as well ~ we had nearly 200 volunteers that came out for the day, many from 0530 until well after the race finished.  Wet and cold, they all had smiles, encouraging these kids as young as 5 to keep going.  As you have stated in many of your posts in the past, an event cannot run well without volunteers, so THANKS goes out to all our volunteers for the County KOS! thumbs up

You are absolutely right!  Kudos to the volunteers, without races could not function.

10 degrees, heavy downpour, strong wind  equaled  lots of tears, lots more purple lips and even more chattering teeth. Those kids did a fantastic job. They kept going in those conditions to stay warm - unfortunately for my daughter, her body shut down. So cold she couldn't function. Coming back from the bike in transition she was pulled from the course close to hypothermia. So proud of her for braving those conditions and knowing when to say Enough is Enough, yet she can't wait for the next one.

Hi April,
It was a miserable day and she wasn't the only one in tears, unfortunately.  We were telling kids that if they could bike and run it that weather, they could bike and run in anything.  We had a few very cold kids and were appreciative of the PEC marathon for supplying us with the foil blankets.  You are right, it is better to pull out than risk getting very ill.  I remember a race that I did once where it was cold and raining and when I finished I had no feeling from my knees down, nor in my hands (not good).  Hopefully your daughter was tended to by St John's Ambulance or EMS ~ that is why they are there.

Every child on the course that day deserved a metal whether they finished the race or not; I am hoping your daughter received one.  Let me know if she didn't and I will leave one at Tri and Run for her.  We are hoping the weather Gods are kinder next year!  Your daughter should be proud of her accomplishments!  I am not sure how old she is but Amherstview  has a KOS as does Kingston (only up to age 11) later in the summer, maybe the weather will be better and she could try again.

Cheers,
Michelle

Thank you Michelle, she did receive a medal. My nephew went and got one for her. And she is already registered for the Amherstview KOS. She is young enough for Kingston but I believe she will be away at camp.
Great race, despite mother nature.
