You have bought your bike and helmet, decided on your pedals and have your water bottle firmly in place.  Now what?  If you haven?t taken a bike maintenance course then hopefully you have found a great bike mechanic, someone that can support you and your bike through the many miles you will ride together.
You need to pump your bike tires every time you ride.  Road bike tires will take between 100-120psi which is NOT detectable by the human hand.  A basic floor pump can be purchased for under $30 and can save you from buying multiple tubes due to pinch flats.  If you don?t have a repair kit or know how to change a tube then you may have to visit your mechanic for costly tire changes.
As cables stretch derailleurs need to be adjusted.  If you don?t know how to do it correctly or don?t address it at all then your mechanic may need to change your chain and/or a cassette with cost starting at $250.
So don?t wait for something to go wrong, get in for your spring tune up and make friends with your mechanic!

Join Tri & Run Sports on June 27th for a cycling demo day in support of the Sears Kids Cancer Ride and try out a variety of Scott bikes and Shimano wheels.  Ride 30-40k on a mostly flat scenic route then partake in a BBQ.  All riding levels welcome.
July 1 is the Canada Day Dash 5k in Zwick?s Park hosted by the Belleville Runners club.  Details and registration forms can be found at www.redballradio.com.
July 11 the Quinte Triathlon and Duathlon will be held in Batawa on a slightly rolling bike course and a pancake flat run course.  Details and registration can be found at www.triandrunsports.com or www.eventsonline.ca.
Christine Bennett raced the Smiths Falls Duathlon (2.2/26/5) in 1:24:59 placing first in her age group and second woman overall while Bryan Dunham raced the triathlon (500/26/5) in 1:27:37.  At the Subaru Guelph Sprint (750/19/5) Loralee Craig and Jesse McInroy finished in 1:53:08, Jay Moxness finished the Duathlon (2/19/5) in 1:09:59, John Kooistra raced the Olympic (1.5/40/10) in 2:37:45 and Andrea Baker completed the Super Sprint (200/26/5) in 1:49:44.
Kelly Moore (54:22) and Doni White (54:27) ran the Altuna Do it For Dad 10k while at the 33rd Annual Waterloo races Branden Rumpel ran the 5k in 22:27, Janet Salo (55:14) and Jon Grand (55:52) raced the 10k and participating in the 3k were John Summers (14:24), Brook Rumpel (19:07) and Angela Rumpel (19:07).
The Niagara Ultra Half Marathon and 50k was held on June 19.  Run from Niagara On the Lake along the Niagara Parkway and into Niagara Falls this is a beautiful, challenging race worth adding to your race calendar.  As one of the few road ultras, this is a great venue to try your hand at the longer distance on a surface you now.  In the 50k Tim Johnson won the race in 3:55:57 while Kerry MacKinnon (2:34:39) and Lou Scanlon (1:40:44) ran the half marathon.
