Losing a toenail

I've officially lost my first toenail....and I'm not sure how to feel about it! I thought that was something that happened to marathoners, which I am not!!
A couple of weeks ago my 2nd toe on my right foot was hurting pretty bad, and I realized that my toenail was raised up quite a bit and a bunch of fluid was underneath it. Being the at home remedy type person that I am, I grabbed a disinfected razor blade, and sliced open the tip of my toe and let the fluid out. My toe nail has now completely separated from the nail bed. Good news is that it doesn't hurt at all, and it's not infected.
My question is, what should I do about it? I cut the nail down as far as I could, but I'm worried dirt and germs are going to get down there and cause a problem. I've been wearing flip flops to try and keep my feet from sweating.
Oh, and now I've also noticed under the nail on my 3rd toe is starting to hurt. Could it be a problem with my shoes??

I am by no means an expert, but could your shoes be too small? Hope you don't lose another... sounds sore.
My mom plays a ton of tennis and used to lose them every year at the beginning of each season, then she started playing year round and it stopped. Not sure if that was why..

Oh, my friend, it's not what they take away from you that counts. It's what you do with what you have left.

'A' toenail......you are lucky, I've got almost none left LOL.
Two words...... NAIL POLISH ... If mine aren't gone, they are purple, but I run by pushing my foot forward in my shoes.

Really? I've been so careful! I've been drinking nothing but water or water with Nuun, choking down my salt tabs every 30 minutes....what the heck am I missing?
